Microsoft Presents Initiatives to Help African Business

A report in allAfrica.com says Microsoft has "announced a new agreement with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation to promote innovative uses of technology to support entrepreneurship and create opportunities for small firms in Africa."

Several African heads of state joined Bill Gates and former U.S. president Bill Clinton at a conference to discuss how technology can help make Africa more competitive.

One important step will be to develop training courses and business services that can be delivered online to the community centres.

Microsoft also announced it would be releasing versions of MS Windows in 4 African languages -- Afrikaans, Zulu, Setswana, and Swahili, opening the use of technology to 150 million Africans. Others emphasized that the cost of computers and software must come down in order for Africans to take advantage of them.

The south African educational system came in for significant criticism for not preparing African youth for a business world where technology is vitally important.
