Health Care Costs Threaten Retirement Security

Health care and drug costs for retirees in the U.S. are getting more expensive every year, and these costs are leaving many people behind.

30% of workers will continue to receive health benefits in retirement. Many are in government jobs. Only 13% of private-sector employees have health benefit coverage in retirement. The number of workers having this kind of coverage is shrinking.

Is it feasible to try going without health insurance? Only very wealthy people can afford the shock of a serious illness or a stay in the hospital. These can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Medicare only kicks in at age 65, so early retirees will have serious problems if they do not have health insurance through their employer. Here are some practical suggestions:

- See if you can get onto your spouse's health benefit plan
- Before you go into retirement ask your employer if you can stay on the plan. You will probably have to pay the full amount of the coverage.
- Check online insurance sites. You may find some options.
- Consider higher deductible amounts
- Check out tax-free health savings accounts
- Don't retire if it means giving up your employment benefits

Some statistics:
- In 2004 70% of people 60-64 were offered coverage - with widely varying costs.
- Average cost for person 60-64 was ,185 compared to ,170 for a person 18-24.
- A family policy for a family headed by someone 60-64 was ,248.

Under new U.S. Medicare programs starting this year, certain drugs will now be covered. Drug plans are all over the map ranging from less than /month to more than . Many plans have 0 deductibles, and prescription drugs require a payment at the pharmacy.

Many people, especially retirees, will pay thousands every year for drugs, over and above their insurance premiums. Estimates are that a couple 65 years old will require 0,000 for 20 years of health costs, not including many routine expenses such as non-prescription drugs, dental or long-term care.
