Table Salt and Sea Salt are Not the Same Thing

According to an article at NewsTarget.com, the blanket condemnation of salt may be off the mark. At least if the "alternative health community" has anything to say about it.

In response to an AMA report calling for an overall reduction in consumption of salt, many in the alternative health community are saying it is not that simple. Their claim is that not all sources of sodium and salt are the same. They claim that table salt in its chemically bleached supermarket form is nothing like the organic sea salt you can get in health food stores.

Sodium is required for the body to function properly. It regulates fluid volumes, blood pressure and helps keep blood vessels functioning properly. But our western diets contain much too much sodium. The average American consumes between 3x and 10x the recommended amount of sodium. And furthermore table salt is unfriendly to the human body and has no redeeming mineral benefits.

But the advocates of unrefined sea salt claim it is a naturally occuring substance that includes minerals such as calcium and magnesium and many trace minerals. And this complex unrefined form of salt is exactly what the body needs, according to its advocates.

What they object to is that the AMA does not distinguish between table salt (which they usually claim should not be consumed at all) and sea salt which is a highly effective source of important minerals required by the body.
